SPECIAL: Giving Thanks to the Unemployed

from Ask Dr. Applewhite

What a controversial thought!  How can anyone think of giving thanks for someone being unemployed or underemployed in these times of “economic recession” and “corporate greed”. Students and teachers must use caution when making statements like these when discussing someone’s perceived or real misfortunes. One of the most difficult challenges we face, regardless of our religious beliefs, is how to be truly thankful when our needs have not been met for a very long time. The basic needs of putting food on the table, providing a roof over our heads, winter clothing, gas in the car, heat in the house and so many other things an unemployment check won’t allow us to buy anymore is a frightening situation for many of us. In addition, the holiday season of gift-giving is here and we can’t do for ourselves and others the way we used to. Listen to our inspiring show or share your story of how you are able to participate in “thanks-giving”.
