Special High Five India with Shruti Merchant
from India A Story in the Making with Loveena Tandon · host Loveena Tandon
High Five India | South Asian Heritage Month Special It’s South Asian Heritage Month — running from 18 July to 17 August — a time to celebrate, commemorate, and reflect on the rich tapestry of South Asian histories and identities. First established in the UK in 2020, the dates mark two defining moments: 18 July, when the Indian Independence Act received royal assent, and 17 August, when the Radcliffe Line was published — drawing the borders between India, Pakistan, and modern-day Bangladesh. Today, over 5 million people in the UK — roughly 7.5% of the population — are of South Asian heritage. In England and Wales alone, nearly 1 in 10 people identified as Asian British in the 2021 census, making South Asians the largest Asian ethnic group in the UK. To mark this vibrant month, India: A Story in the Making presents a special High Five India feature on Shruti Merchant— the powerhouse choreographer behind Come Fall in Love: The DDLJ Musical, now lighting up the stage in Manchester. Carrying forward a dazzling legacy — her sister is the iconic Vaibhavi Merchant, known for timeless Bollywood hits like “Dholi Taaro Dhol Baaje” — Shruti is taking Indian storytelling global, one spectacular step at a time. Because truly, nothing celebrates South Asian culture more than our food, our films, and our music — and no wonder Bollywood’s eternal love story Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge continues to win hearts, from Mumbai to Manchester.
