Special Parent Series: Episode 215 with "Jennifer"

from Success is Subjective: Real People. Raw Stories. Embracing a Non-Linear Life! · host Joanna Lilley, MA, NCC

For the entire month of May, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Joanna is bringing you a special parent series, where she interviews parents whose children have overcome a variety of mental health challenges. Today’s Success is Subjective episode is a conversation between Joanna and Jennifer Taylor. With a unique perspective as both a mom of a young adult with ADHD and Autism, and as a professional working in the therapeutic world, Jennifer brings great wisdom and insight to parents with children and teens who are struggling. She discusses her son’s journey, explaining that by 9th grade, when he was asked to leave his school, she had a crucial decision to make. Without delay in obtaining the resources her son needed in order to be successful, Jennifer and her now 23 year old son are able to enjoy the fruit of their labor after many years of turmoil. In closing, she encourages parents to befriend their grief and to practice self compassion, while remembering that progression is often incremental and sometimes it’s backward and forward. Disclaimer: Please note that this special parent series is the parent perspective of their child’s mental health and/or substance abuse crisis. This is merely one perspective of a single story, and it’s important to know that names have been changed for the protection of the parents and the children. These episodes may include details surrounding suicide, self-harm, substance abuse including overdose, hospitalizations, psychotic episodes, and other traumatic experiences which include parts of the treatment journey.
