Special Parent Series: Episode 217 with “David”

For the entire month of May, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Joanna is bringing you a special parent series, where she interviews parents whose children have overcome a variety of mental health challenges. On today’s episode of Success is Subjective, Joanna hears from David, the parent of a daughter whose struggles became evident by the time she was a preteen. He talks about the challenge of distinguishing “normal pre/teen behavior” from behavior that indicates that a child may need support. David emphasizes the necessity of parents and families doing work themselves, parallel to their struggling child’s process. He also helps listeners evaluate the balance of protecting your struggling child’s privacy, while also making sure that you yourself have a supportive parent community. After a therapeutic boarding school and a wilderness therapy program, David takes pride in how far his whole family has come, and especially his daughter who is currently a high school freshman, succeeding without the support of a boarding school.
