Spider-Man (2002)
from Sequelcast 2 and Friends Hosted by Mat Bradley-Tschirgi
Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher talk about Spider-Man from 2002, the first film in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy. Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is a nerd who gets bit by a DNA-enhanced super spider. Parker struggles with his super powers while trying to flirt with Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst). After discovering that his best friend's father (Willem Dafoe) is responsible for causing crime as the Green Goblin, Spider-Man has to make some tough choices to save New York City. Raimi goes for candy-colored angst, recalling the original Steve Ditko run of the Spider-Man books. In a ballsy move, it takes almost an hour before Spider-Man puts on his iconic suit. This is a sweet, gentle super-hero movie that feels a bit rushed towards the end. Thrasher enjoys The Tick on Amazon Prime, a new take on the latest of several adaptations of Ben Edlund's 1980s indie comic book character of the same name. Mat finally watches The Craft, a 1990s piece of pagan puffery that has a great third act and a gonzo performance by Fairuza Balk.
