Spike Lee: The Man Without Fear

The word "fearless' gets bandied about quite a bit in the world of art. We love to pat people on the back for their "courage" when they make some privileged point about how shallow their privileged upbringing was, or when they do something that involves sex. Mostly when they do something that involves sex. Almost always when it has to do with sex. But what about a filmmaker who genuinely seems to have no fear. A filmmaker who made a career out of forcing uncomfortable questions on people who don't want to admit that there are questions to be asked. A filmmaker who is more interested in asking questions than giving answers is a  rare thing. Spike Lee, like him or not, is that filmmaker. He has shown not only a complete lack of fear, but a complete lack of the CONCEPT of fear. He has held us by the throat and slammed us in the face with more uncomfortable questions than many people face in a lifetime, and refused to give us answers, preferring that we leave asking more and more questions than we had at the beginning.
