Spill The P: 5786 Eikev

from I Am Jewtiful Podcast Hosted by Daniella Ruth

This week on Spill the P, we are diving into Parashat Eikev—and beginning with one word that completely changes how many people understand their relationship with the Creator: reward. The Hebrew does not say that we receive a reward for listening. It says that because we listen, safeguard, and live according to the mishpatim, the Creator continues to safeguard the covenant He made with us. That is not transaction. That is relationship. In this episode, we discuss why the Creator loves us even when He does not like what we choose, why healthy relationships can be both beautiful and ugly, and why boundaries, discipline, separation, and discomfort are essential parts of growth. We also talk about performative righteousness, the ego’s need for instant gratification, the danger of confusing behavior with identity, and why Moshe repeatedly reminds Bnei Yisrael that they are not receiving Ha’aretz because they are “good.” Finally, we explore the contrast between Mitzrayim and Ha’aretz. Mitzrayim is flat, predictable, and watered through human effort. Ha’aretz is filled with hills and valleys and receives its water from heaven. The Creator is not promising us a life without highs and lows. He is reminding us that He will meet us, water us, and care for us through all of them. The purpose of Eikev is not to teach us how to earn from the Creator. It is to teach us how to remain in relationship with Him.
