Smith's birthday is April 16, 1972. Life on Mars was published by Graywolf in 2011, and it was the 2012 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. She teaches at Harvard University, where she is a professor of English and of African and African American Studies and the Susan S. and Kenneth L.
