SpiNNaker and The Future of Systems on A Chip

from Risk Roundup

Prof. Stephen Furber, ICL Professor of Computer Engineering, School of Computer Science at The University of Manchester, based in the UK Participates in Risk Roundup to Discuss SpiNNaker and The Future of Systems on A Chip. Neuromorphic Chips  While we have made remarkable advances in software, and the power and promise of software that learn by example in real-time are immeasurable, the challenge has been so far about lack of parallel progress in computer hardware to enhance machine intelligence / deep intelligence for complex problems we want to solve for the future of humanity. Moreover, since the conventional, general-purpose computing chips haven’t changed much over the years, and efforts are moving towards developing systems on a chip (at all levels and for all functions and processes), there is an intense research effort focused on redesigning more efficient, scalable, portable and lower energy consuming microprocessor chips that mimic the human brain circuitry. These rapidly evolving neuromorphic chips and computing platform is exciting many as it would allow us to design systems on the evolving neuromorphic chips. As a result, the competition is heating up. SpiNNaker and The Future of Systems on a Chip While the focus of today’s discussion is on SpiNNaker, it is important to understand and evaluate the potential of the evolving neuromorphic chips broadly for developing systems on a chip. So, as we begin to understand and evaluate innovations in neuromorphic chips from across nations, it is important to remember that at the center of this evaluation is a need to understand what these advances would mean for deep intelligence and how would it impact the future of humanity. For more please watch the Risk Roundup Webcast or hear the Risk Roundup Podcast About the Guest Steve Furber is the ICL Professor of Computer Engineering in the School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester. He received his B.A. degree in Mathematics in 1974 and his Ph.D. in Aerodynamics in 1980 from the University of Cambridge, England. From 1981 to 1990 he worked in the hardware development group within the R&D department at Acorn Computers Ltd and was a principal designer of the BBC Microcomputer and the ARM 32-bit RISC microprocessor, both of which earned Acorn Computers a Queen’s Award for Technology. Upon moving to the University of Manchester in 1990 he established the Amulet research group which has interests in asynchronous logic design and power-efficient computing, and which merged with the Parallel Architectures and Languages group in 2000 to form the Advanced Processor Technologies group. From 2003 to 2008 the APT group was supported by an EPSRC Portfolio Partnership Award. He is now interested in understanding how the brain works and is building a million ARM cores into a computer to model brain function.
