Denk aan het schandaal in Griekenland, waarbij onder andere de oppositie werd bespioneerd. Daarin speelt speciale software – Pegasus genoemd - een cruciale rol, die op telefoons van bijvoorbeeld de oppositie kan worden geïnstalleerd. Dat heeft grote gevolgen voor de democratie en rechtsstaat in Europa, zegt Tweede Kamerlid Pieter Omtzigt. Als rapporteur van de Raad van Europa organiseerde hij er een hoorzitting over in Parijs.  (11:44) Erdogans ‘laatste’ strijd Morgen gaat de hoorzitting in de zaak tegen de burgemeester van Istanbul verder. Deze Ekrem Imamoglu hangt een celstraf van vier jaar boven het hoofd. Hij wordt verdacht van het beledigen van de kiesraad. Imamoglu is een prominente tegenstander van president Erdogan, en zou zomaar een sterke uitdager van Erdogan kunnen worden in de presidentsverkiezingen volgend jaar. De laatste presidentsverkiezing waaraan Erdogan meedoet, zo verklaarde hij onlangs. Een gesprek met Nienke van Heukelingen, EU-Turkije expert van Instituut Clingendael, die onlangs in Turkije was.
