Spirit and Truth - Week 2

from Eastview Baptist Church Teaching Podcast · host Eastview Baptist Church

Main Passage: Galatians 5:16-26, John 4:25-26, Romans 12:1-2Big Idea:True worshipers live transformed lives, carrying the presence of God everywhere they go. Worship is not an event but a lifestyle. In Spirit – Worship that is led by, energized by, and in communion with the Holy Spirit (John 3:6, Romans 8:14-16). It is from the heart, not mere ritual or external tradition. In Truth – Worship that is rooted in God’s revealed truth, particularly in Christ, who is the Truth (John 14:6). It is biblically sound, doctrinally pure, and aligns with who God is.Jesus is calling for a new kind of worshiper, one who is fully engaged in the Spirit of God and fully grounded in the truth of God (study of His’ Word and time in prayer). This is the culmination of worship—where heart and head, passion and precision, relationship and revelation all meet in Christ Himself.Old Testament FoundationsDeuteronomy 6:4-5 – “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”Isaiah 29:13 – “This people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men.”New Testament FulfillmentMatthew 22:37 – Jesus reiterates the greatest commandment: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind.”·      This mirrors "spirit" (heart and soul) and "truth" (mind, knowledge of God).Deuteronomy 6:5 lists heart, soul, and might (Hebrew: lebab, nephesh, me'od).Matthew 22:37 lists heart, soul, and mind (Greek: kardia, psyche, dianoia).Romans 12:1 – “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”·      Worship is now our entire life, not just a place or ritual. Main Points:1. Worship is Rooted (formed and matured) in Encountering Jesus The Samaritan woman goes from debating the understanding of traditions to realizing she’s speaking to the Messiah. Worship starts with seeing Jesus rightly. To better (fully) understand Jesus is to welcome His plans for you!2. Worship Transforms the Worshiper Romans 12:2 – “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” Conformed          From: syn – with or together + schema – form or appearance  Means to conform or shape oneself according to a particular pattern or model. It implies external conformity to a standard or example, often with the nuance of adapting to the surrounding environment or societal norms.[1] A surface level transition to “look more like the world around you.” (To fake it or compromise.) Transformed                From: meta – change + morphe – form or shape.  The term implies a change that is not merely superficial but involves an essential alteration in nature or character.[2] A total change of nature in both the physical and spiritual. Indicating a “new way of being” Worship is more than a moment—it’s a life continually reshaped by God’s presence. The Samaritan woman went from an outsider (conformed) to an evangelist (transformed) (John 4:28-30).-       The first people she witnessed to (shared with) were the very same people who had pushed her to the margins of society. 3. Worshipers Carry the Presence of God to the World The Samaritan woman couldn’t keep her experience to herself—she had to tell others (v28-29). True worship convicts us for a life of mission. Jesus is calling us to the role of “EVERYDAY MISSIONARIES!”Gospel Presentation & Call to Action:How do we measure our walk?Galatians 5:22-26 NLT If you’ve never truly worshiped in Spirit and Truth, Jesus is inviting you today. If you’ve been a spectator instead of a true worshiper, it’s time to surrender. Call: Commit to a lifestyle of worship and take Jesus with you wherever you go.Will you be a true worshiper? The Father is seeking such people.
