We are to put to death the deeds of the body, but not on our own – it is accomplished by the Holy Spirit. We do it, but by His power and enabling. So, what exactly does this look like? Paul explains further that this vital partnership with the Holy Spirit is one in which he leads us – like a commander leading His troops into the crucial battle we must win. The context of Romans 8 helps us see three strategic battle grounds where we must engage the enemy of flesh and we must win – what we think about, who we follow, and what we do. The flesh confronts us at each of these points to lead us to sin, the Spirit meets us in each battle to lead us to righteousness. To be a child of God is to be led by the Spirit!
