'SPIRITUAL DISOBEDIENCE' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose (Contemporary)
from All Souls Unitarian Church · host All Souls Unitarian Church, Tulsa, Oklahoma
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 20, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry. SERMON DESCRIPTION Christianity, the Enlightenment, and Transcendentalism are the three major tributaries that flow together to create the liberal religious tradition we call Unitarian Universalism. Henry David Thoreau, who became famous only after this death at 45, is a great example of someone who transcended his own time. In the 19th century, he resisted the social and religious demands of his day and insisted on finding his own way forward. Who was this man whose heart led him to seek communion with God in the woods, and whose conscience led him to fight openly for the abolition of slavery? How did he find the courage to say "No" to the world's demands and "Yes" to the invitations of the Spirit? This Sunday, we'll apply the wisdom of his life to our own spiritual journeys as we navigate our increasingly complex world.
