St. Mary Major and the Theotokos

On the Feast of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome, Fr. Miguel reflects on the importance of Mary’s title as Mother of God (Theotokos). After the Council of Ephesus in 431 affirmed this truth, the basilica was rededicated to her as the Mother of God.Fr. Miguel explains that calling Mary the Mother of God does not make her divine — it clarifies who Jesus truly is: one divine Person with two natures, fully God and fully man. Mary always leads us to her Son.He also notes the special connection between the Shrine’s Grotto and St. Mary Major, inviting everyone to visit the Grotto today to gain the associated indulgence. Just as the basilica was dedicated to God, each of us was dedicated and consecrated to God at our baptism.May Our Lady, Mother of God, help us live out that consecration with greater fidelity.
