St. Padre Pio (Morning Air/Great Stories About Great Saints)

from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio

In this All Saints’ Day episode of Morning Air, John Morales and Dr. Annabelle Moseley explore the incredible life and legacy of St. Padre Pio. You know, the beloved, mystical Capuchin friar who’s somehow like everyone’s personal priest. If you’ve ever felt a connection to Padre Pio, you’re definitely not alone. Dr. Annabelle reminds us that he’s famous for his warmth, personal touch, and, oh yes, his stigmata.   Here are some key highlights:   Padre Pio’s Miraculous Life 🌟: From bearing the wounds of Christ to his deep, gritty love for the suffering, Padre Pio really walked the walk. His stigmata covered not just his hands but also his feet and side, making him a living image of the crucified Christ. And he didn’t exactly show it off; in fact, he begged God to take it away to keep him humble. Talk about heroic humility!   Special Bond with America Fun fact! Padre Pio had a unique connection to the U.S. because his dad worked in Queens to help fund his studies for the priesthood. So, in a way, he saw himself as part American: a reminder that saints’ stories can intertwine with ours in surprising ways.   The Confessor of Souls 🔑💭: Known for his remarkable gift of “reading hearts,” Padre Pio’s confessions weren’t your typical “bless me, Father.” He’d often prompt penitents to reveal hidden struggles, leading them to a deeper, life-changing encounter with God. Imagine waiting in line, knowing this saint could see straight into your soul: terrifying yet liberating!   Masterclass on Redemptive Suffering ✝️💪: Padre Pio’s view on suffering? It’s an opportunity to unite with Christ, offering up pain as a gift. He even founded a hospital called the “House for the Alleviation of Suffering”: so, yes, he was serious about bringing compassion to those in need.   November and Purgatory 🕊️: With his devotion to the Holy Souls, Padre Pio is a perfect saint to call on this month as we pray for loved ones in purgatory. He often spoke of how honoring Christ’s agony in Gethsemane could increase our intercessory power for the Holy Souls. So, keep him in mind if you’re praying for those who’ve passed.   Don’t Forget: Pray, Hope, and Don’t Worry! 🙏: Known for his famous motto, “Pray, hope, and don’t worry,” Padre Pio’s advice is simple but powerful. Dr. Annabelle even recommends wearing a T-shirt with the saying on it, or having a holy card to remind you, like John does in the studio.   A Padre Pio-Inspired Idea: Host a dinner in his honor this November. Serve up Italian favorites and ask guests to bring a photo of a loved one who has passed away. Together, you can remember them in prayer: a beautiful way to honor the Holy Souls and feel that “Padre Pio presence.”   Saint Padre Pio, pray for us!      The best way to listen to the Best of the Week is on our #1 Free Catholic App. It’s free, and always will be!
