STA132 Focus on The Hip Pt1 : ’Hip Dysplasia’ with Holly Soper-Doyle

from The STA Clinician Podcast · host Sports Therapy Association

In Ep.132 of the Sports Therapy Association Podcast, we bring you Part 1 of this month’s ‘Focus on The Hip’, with special guest Holly Soper-Doyle talking to us about Hip Dysplasia, a condition defined by the socket of the hip joint being too shallow. Hip Dysplasia, more prevalent in women (8:2) than men, is known to be a common cause of developing early onset osteoarthritis. If left undiagnosed and/or untreated the joint can degenerate so much that it results in bone on bone contact and therefore requires a hip replacement. Holly Soper-Doyle is Specialist musculoskeletal Physiotherapist at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and owner of Integrum Physiotherapy in North London. Her passion is highlighting the gap that exists in diagnosis of hip dysplasis, as well as evidence informed resources for rehabilitation, both conservative management and pre & post-operatively. Topics discussed: 6:30 Poor diagnosis of Hip Dysplasia - not taught at university. 9:00 What is Hip Dysplasia? Different types if Hip Dysplasia 11:45 Risk factors for Hip Dysplasia? Are you born with Hip Dysplasia or does it develop after birth? 12:40 Can hip dysplasia be caused by swaddling? 14:40 Do all babies get screened for hip dysplasia? 21:00 Hip dislocations vs hip subluxations 24:00 Symptoms of Hip Dysplasia vs symptoms of FAI (Femoroacetabular impingement) 26:00 What can soft tissue therapits add to their subjective and objective assessment to help in diagnosis of hip dysplasia? 35:00 Can you be asymptomatic with hip dysplasia? 38:40 Hip Dysplasia vs Hypermobility 40:45 Rehab for Hip Dysplasia 50.00 Surgery for Hip Dysplasia 55:00 The psychological damage caused by late diagnosis of hip dysplasia 59:00 Contact Holly Soper-Doyle and connect on social media Useful Links: The Hip Dysplasia Physio Website: https://hipdysplasiaphysio.com/ I'm A Hippy Website: https://imahippy.org/ Help For Hip Dysplasia Podcast: https://www.helpforhipdysplasia.com Holly Soper-Doyle on Instagram: @hipdysplasiaphysio Integrum Physiotherapy Website: https://www.integrumphysiotherapy.co.uk/ Our sincere thanks to Holly Soper-Doyle for giving up her time to be a guest on the show, especially given the minimal sleep she is experiencing due to the joys of having a 9 month old son!
