Finsteres Mittelalter? Von wegen! Städte, wie wir sie heute kennen, entstanden um das Jahr 1200 herum. Zwischen 1150 und 1250 gab es einen Boom, schreibt Autor Matthias Wemhoff. Fast alle Städte, die wir heute in Deutschland kennen, entstanden Schlag auf Schlag nach 1150. Hatte es bis dahin auf dem Gebiet des Heiligen Römischen Reiches (deutscher Nation) 200 Städte gegeben, waren es hundert Jahre später 1200. Ein Faktor: Das Warmzeit-Klima, das die Landwirtschaft beflügelte, die wiederum eine wachsende Bevölkerung ernähren konnte. Mittelalterarchäologe Wemhoff und seine Co-Autorin, die Wissenschaftsjournalistin Gisela Graichen, zeigen im Buch, dass man lange Zeit den Aspekt des Planens bei der Entstehung der Städte stark unterschätzt hat. Sie belegen, wie in der ersten Hälfte des 12. Jahrhunderts Landesherren in Städtegründungen eine Chance gesehen haben, ihre Einnahmen zu verbessern und ihr Territorium auszubauen und zu sichern - die Idee von der "Stadt aus wilder Wurzel” sei heute überholt. Wie wurden aus Städten dann Orte eigenverantwortlicher Mitbestimmung? Was haben Rathäuser und Marktplätze damit zu tun? Welche Rolle spielten schon früh urbaner Fortschritt in Technik und Medizin und das, was wir heute "Umweltschutz” und "Stadtmanagement” nennen? Das Buch erzählt aber auch, inwiefern unser Bild des Mittelalters zunächst vor allem Historiker geprägt haben und welche neuen naturwissenschaftlichen Methoden der Archäologie es heute ergänzen.
