Stage Door

from Lux Redux: Hollywood's Timeless Theater

Originally Aired: February 20, 1939 Lux Radio Theater #207, "Stage Door," brings to life the struggles and dreams of young actresses living at the Footlights Club, a theatrical boarding house just off Broadway. Jean Maitland, a dancer who hasn't worked in six months, shares the cramped quarters with other hopeful performers, all waiting for their big break. The tension among the girls is palpable as they borrow each other's stockings, endure terrible meals, and watch shows close before they open. Jean's relationship with producer Anthony Powell sets her apart from the others, sparking jealousy and sharp exchanges. When wealthy newcomer Terry Randall arrives with multiple trunks and requests for a private bath, she disrupts the delicate balance of the club's "big happy family." The clash between Jean's street-smart cynicism and Terry's privileged background promises conflict as these two very different women are forced to share a room. As the girls navigate the harsh realities of show business, their individual dreams collide with the brutal truth that talent alone may not be enough to survive in the merciless world of Broadway.
