In this stage, the learner has had enough time to absorb the language and now has a bank account full of words that they can use and understand. It is important to note that these words come directly from the silent period. These words come from that zero to six months of absorbing the language. The words that you can expect during this early production stage are words which your child or the student has been absorbing during the silent period. Because you have built a strong relationship with your child and you have gone through this journey of learning a second language together, you are fully aware of the words he or she knows based on the words you have been using.This is key because it will help you prompt your child in using those words as a response to questions and it will help both of you feel successful in the language learning journey. A few ways in which you can get one to two word responses are asking yes and no questions, asking either or questions and we will cover this in more detail in chapter eight. Basically, asking any question to which the answer can be a one or two word response. When you ask these questions, please make sure that they are real and meaningful.In other words, do not use these one to two word responses as a way to test your child and to constantly be asking, "Is this blue or red?" or "Is this my nose or my ears?" That will take away the real and meaningful purpose of language and instead of it becoming a conversation, your child will feel like he or she is being tested on a consistent basis.
