Solo negli Stati Uniti è stato stimato che il costo annuo per la gestione dei pazienti con disturbi neurologi funzionali in pronto soccorso e nei reparti di degenza ammonti a circa 1.2 miliardi di dollari. Negli ultimi 15/20 anni l’interesse della comunità scientifica e dei neurologi nei confronti di queste condizioni è cresciuto esponenzialmente, permettendoci di meglio comprendere la natura di questi disturbi. Risulta fondamentale individuare prontamente un disturbo neurologico funzionale, al fine attivare quanto prima una presa in carico del paziente e impostare il trattamento adeguato. Risulta altresì importante riconoscere tali sintomi in pazienti che presentano altre condizioni neurologiche, di modo da evitare indagini strumentali non necessarie e inadeguati trattamenti.
