Si tratta però di un disturbo estremamente eterogeneo e proprio in virtù di questa ricca fenomenologia clinica, l’approccio al paziente rappresenta una grande sfida per il neurologo; di qui la necessità nel corso degli anni di definirne criteri comuni di descrizione fenomenologica sulla base di caratteristiche clinico-laboratoristico-strumentali e sulla base dell’eziologia, allo scopo di supportare la diagnosi differenziale.
