La tossina è infatti un farmaco che, se ben usato, cambia la vita dei pazienti. I vantaggi di questo farmaco non finiscono qui: infatti, è privo di effetti collaterali sistemici, ed anche quelli locali, se dovessero verificarsi, sono temporanei! È per questo che garantisce un’elevata compliance dei pazienti. E, se ci pensiamo, è un farmaco relativamente recente. Infatti, è solo alla fine del 19esimo secolo che Kerner, dopo aver studiato gli effetti del “sausage poisoning” (anche su di sé, come di solito fanno i pionieri) introdusse la tossina botulinica al mondo. Grazie alle sue osservazioni e ai suoi esperimenti, egli ipotizzò il meccanismo d’azione della tossina ed anche il suo possibile uso terapeutico. Oggi, naturalmente, sappiamo che aveva ragione.
