Gianmarco BellucciLa Sclerosi Multipla (SM) è la più frequente patologia neuroinfiammatoria cronica del sistema nervoso centrale, nonché la prima causa di disabilità non traumatica nei giovani adulti In Italia ne sono affette circa 140 mila persone, in grande prevalenza donne. L’esordio clinico e la diagnosi avvengono prevalentemente tra i 20 e 40 anni di età – in un periodo che coincide con l’età fertile. Sebbene non esistano dati a supporto di un’inferenza diretta dei processi immunopatologici patologici sulla fertilità, il tasso riproduttivo delle persone con SM è inferiore rispetto a quello della popolazione generale. Questo è imputabile, verosimilmente, all’impatto psicosociale della diagnosi stessa, al possibile coinvolgimento neurologico delle funzioni sessuali, nonché, in alcuni casi, alle tempistiche e ai vincoli del percorso clinico-terapeutico. In questa puntata di Neuropod, riassumeremo le evidenze sul tema della fertilità in donne e uomini con SM, discutendone le implicazioni per la pratica clinica e le prospettive future.
