Fabio FerrandesL’emicrania è un disturbo neurologico cronico che, secondo l’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità, colpisce circa una persona su sette nel mondo.Si manifesta con episodi ricorrenti e spesso molto simili tra loro. Proprio questa ripetitività, questa “stereotipia” clinica, ci fa pensare che esista un meccanismo alla base,  ancora in parte sconosciuto, che rende alcuni cervelli particolarmente vulnerabili.In altre parole, esistono cervelli capaci di generare, in modo ricorrente, episodi di dolore intenso, nausea, vomito e una marcata ipersensibilità agli stimoli sensoriali, come la luce e i rumori. Comprendere questi meccanismi è fondamentale, sia per chi soffre di emicrania sia per chi se ne occupa. Secondo l’OMS, infatti, l’emicrania è tra le prime venti cause globali di disabilità. E non è solo un problema sanitario individuale: in Europa, si stima che il costo annuale legato all’emicrania sia di 111 miliardi di euro. Per dare un’idea dell’entità, basti pensare che l’intero PNRR, il Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza, ha stanziato per l’Italia circa 194 miliardi di euro: poco meno del doppio del costo annuo dell’emicrania per tutta l’Unione Europea.Oggi, proviamo a capire cosa rende il cervello emicranico diverso dagli altri, e lo facciamo da una prospettiva affascinante: quella della neurofisiologia.
