Stand Firm in Truth, Stay Away from Deception“Now I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.” — Romans 16:17 (NIV)We live in a world filled with voices telling us what’s right and wrong. On social media, in music, movies, and even in some churches, there are ideas that may sound good but are far from the truth of God’s Word.The apostle Paul knew this would happen. That’s why, in the middle of his greetings to the church in Rome, he pauses to give a serious warning: Watch out for those who teach things that go against the sound doctrine you’ve been taught. Stay away from them. These kinds of teachings don’t just confuse — they cause division, lead people into sin, and pull hearts away from Jesus.Many false teachers speak in the name of Christ, but serve their own desires — whether it’s fame, money, or power. They use smooth words, clever arguments, and spiritual-sounding language to deceive. That’s why being kind and open-hearted isn’t enough. We must be grounded in the truth of the Bible.Practical Applications: - Discernment is protection. Not everything that sounds right is right. Ask God for discernment. Measure every teaching by Scripture. Jesus will never contradict His Word.- Build a strong foundation in the faith. The more you know the Bible, the harder it is to be deceived. Take studying God’s Word seriously. Truth is your shield against error.- Be cautious of spiritual manipulators. Paul says to “keep away from them.” Don’t follow those who twist the truth or cause division. Stay far from spiritual influences that are not rooted in sound doctrine.- Be wise and sensitive. Be wise enough not to be fooled, and sensitive enough not to mislead anyone. Let your words and actions bring people closer to Christ, not further away.PrayerLord God, Teach me to recognize what is true and what is false. Give me a heart rooted in Your Word and sensitive to Your voice. I don’t want to be swept away by false teachings, but to stand strong on the narrow path, even if few follow it. Guard my mind, my eyes, my ears, and my heart. May I be a young person who honors You with truth and helps others find You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
