After condemning the actions of the bully, my mother explained that the next time someone bullied me and I did not stand up for myself, I’d be in even greater trouble with her. I never again let anyone bully me without vigorously defending myself. We have to stand up for ourselves. Loving our neighbors as ourselves also requires us to stand up for others- particularly who Jesus describes as the least of these…We must stand for the poor and poor in spirit, for those who hunger and thirst and those who hunger and thirst for justice, for the immigrant, the sick,  the imprisoned, and even for our enemies.
