Social Strategy Podcast, Episode 34. Welcome to the Social Strategy Podcast, where it's all about making the most of your business with smart tips on what's working now in social media, online business, and good old-fashioned networking. And now your host was also known if you lost PR on Twitter, Vernon Ross. Hey everyone, welcome to the Social Strategy Podcast, bringing you the best of online business, social media, good old-fashioned networking, and on Mondays, mindset.
We're talking about mindset on Mondays, trying to get you in the right mindset to deal with the things you have to deal with in your business, online and in life, helping you communicate your greatness. So, this past week, I've sent out an email and it just had a simple question in it. I thought it was a simple question, it was just a statement, but it turned out to be a really, really powerful question that got a lot of response. I got a lot of emails about this question, so I wanted to dig a little bit deeper into why I asked the question and then ask the follow-up question and give a couple examples to make it clear on what it was I was talking about.
Okay, so the question was, are you standing in the service of others, or are you just serving yourself at the cost of others? And you know, it's often in business, we get wrapped up in making money. That's what we're in business for, but you know, we get wrapped up in generating leads and building an email list and split testing and making sure you're putting people into the right sales funnel and segmenting email lists and all the stuff that goes with running an online and offline business. And that's great, you know, you're in business to make money and to make lots of money.
I'm not one of these don't make any money in your business thing, but I think you really have to take time away and reflect on what you're doing and why you're doing it. There's nothing wrong with being a servant in your marketing. And that's what I wanted to talk to people about. So, the follow-up question I wanted to ask is, what's your bigger mission?
And if you don't have one, develop a mission that's bigger than yourself. For example, if you want to have an email list of a thousand email subscribers, why? Why do you want to have a thousand email subscribers? You know, what value are you offering?
Are you just offering a PDF download or an audio? What value are they getting out of that? Get clear on exactly what you want for them, what you want for your audience and what you want them to get out of your marketing. It's not just about the message you want to deliver.
Are you helping them get to the next level in business? For example, if you have a great productivity tip, is that productivity tip going to make them more efficient in their business so they don't have to spend so much time working in their business so they can spend more time working on their business? Is that productivity tip going to allow them to spend more time with their family so they don't miss those important moments with family? Now, when you start talking about that and you start thinking about your marketing in that way, it becomes more meaningful and you can actually effectively change someone's life by the contribution that you're making with your product or with your service.
And that is standing in the service of others. You're helping to change lives with your marketing and it's all together possible as long as you're conscious and you're really involved in what it is that you're delivering in that service and that you're thinking about other people and the impact you're going to have on their life with your service, with your product, with your marketing. So have a goal that's bigger than yourself and that'll serve you well, my friends. Alright, I'm going to get out of here.
