Starbucks Has a Powder Problem

If you’re not already boycotting Starbucks for Palestine, here’s another reason to make sure you never buy from them again: the company just rolled out a new “blending powder” that’s already making workers sick, and customers are swallowing it without knowing what’s in it.Starbucks introduced this powder in mid‑July 2026 for their newer frozen drinks — the ones they market as smooth, creamy, consistent. The powder is basically a chemistry set: gum arabic, maltodextrin, xanthan gum, “natural flavor,” stevia extract, and silica. They’re using it because it forces the drink to hold its texture longer. It keeps the drink from separating. It makes the product look prettier. It's also poisoning the makers and drinkersBut the people actually handling it — the baristas scooping it all day — are saying it hurts their throats, makes them cough, irritates their chests, and gives them headaches. Videos from workers show the powder going airborne the second the scoop hits it. You can see it hanging in the air. You can see the baristas waving it away.The silica is the biggest red flag. Silicon dioxide. Anti‑caking agent. Cheap, common, and controversial. Inhaling fine silica dust is not normal — it’s tied to serious lung conditions, including silicosis. Workers in construction and mining wear protective gear around this stuff. Starbucks baristas get an apron and a drive‑thru window. And now Starbucks are having you consume it.Starbucks Workers United and individual baristas have been sounding the alarm since the powder dropped. They’re reporting sore throats, coughing fits, chest irritation, and powder clouds floating around the prep stations. And remember: these are the people who have to breathe it in every shift. Customers only get the final product — the drink with the powder blended in — but that doesn’t make the ingredient list any less absurd.We’re at a point where a multinational corporation is literally aerosolizing silica in front of minimum‑wage workers to make frappes look smoother.
