Stephanie Smith- Restoring Civics: Teaching America’s History, Faith, and Foundations

Greg welcomes Stephanie Smith of the Alabama Policy Institute to discuss the importance of restoring authentic civics and American history education in Alabama schools. They explore the historical role of faith in America’s founding, what the separation of church and state actually means, and the need for students to understand both the triumphs and failures of the nation’s past.The conversation also covers efforts to strengthen American and Alabama history education, the importance of teaching history repeatedly throughout a student’s education, and Alabama’s upcoming implementation of legislation involving the display of the Ten Commandments in schools. Smith explains the effort to privately fund and distribute approved, framed Ten Commandments posters to schools across Alabama.The hour also examines the importance of civic engagement and voting, particularly in light of Alabama’s extremely low turnout in the recent special primary, and why a healthy republic depends upon citizens understanding both their rights and responsibilities.
