Stephen Colbert to Write New Lord of the Rings Film
from The World Between Us · host Norse Studio
Stephen Colbert is widely recognized as a "hardcore superfan" and an expert "wizard of knowledge" regarding the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. His deep immersion in the lore is well-documented; he has hosted major franchise panels at Comic-Con, appeared on magazine covers dressed as various Middle-earth characters, and famously won a high-profile trivia contest against other celebrities. His expertise is so thorough that he was only once publicly stumped by a trivia question, which required him to identify a specific page number in the original text. His professional history with the franchise includes a cameo appearance as a Lake-town spy in the 2013 film adaptation of The Hobbit, where he appeared alongside his family. He also wrote and directed a short film in 2019 that featured several prominent cast members from the original movie trilogy.Following the conclusion of his career as a late-night television host in May 2026, Colbert is moving into a major creative role for the film series. He has been announced as a co-writer for a new feature film tentatively titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. This project is a collaboration with veteran Middle-earth filmmakers, including Peter Jackson and Philippa Boyens. The film's narrative finds its inspiration in unadapted chapters from the early sections of The Fellowship of the Ring, specifically the events between the hobbits leaving the Shire and their arrival at the Barrow-downs. The story is set 14 years after the passing of Frodo and follows Samwise Gamgee, Merry, and Pippin as they retrace the steps of their original journey. A primary focus of the plot involves Sam's daughter, Elanor, as she uncovers a long-buried secret concerning why the War of the Ring was nearly lost. This new installment is expected to take a unique tonal direction by leaning into the horror elements found in the original writing. It will explore the Barrow-wights, sinister ancient spirits that haunt burial mounds and use a magical fog to trap and disorient travelers. The film is also set to feature the character Tom Bombadil, who intervenes to rescue the protagonists from these terrifying entities. This project is scheduled to follow another upcoming film centered on the character of Gollum, which is slated for a late 2027 release.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-world-between-us--6886561/support.
