Steve Aoki’s Three-Decade EDM DJ Legacy

Blending high-energy stage stunts with a massive catalog of crossover hits, Steve Aoki remains a legend in electronic dance music. DJ and producer Steve Aoki is globally renowned for his electrifying, high-energy performances. Fans attending massive festivals like EDC and Tomorrowland expect his signature wild stunts: live acrobatic crowd surfing, launching sheet cakes directly into fans’ faces, spraying champagne bottles across the audience, and riding inflatable rafts right over the dance floor. Over his extensive career, Aoki has released nearly a dozen studio albums, shaping the modern electronic landscape through high-profile collaborations and crossover hits.  His massive catalog features heavy-hitting tracks like his 2012 remix of Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness,” which stands as his most streamed single on Spotify.  One of his most recognizable songs is the 2013 club and stadium anthem “Boneless,” which also spawned a vocal version “Delirious” with Kid Ink.  Aoki was one of the first American artists to collaborate with BTS during their mainstream explosion in 2017.   Their track, “MIC Drop” remix has gathered over 1.6 billion views on YouTube. Aoki grew up in Newport Beach, California and attended UC Santa Barbara where he graduated in 2000 with two bachelor’s degrees – one in women's studies and the other in sociology.  The Japanese American DJ is the son of Rocky Aoki, the visionary founder of the Benihana restaurant chain.  His musical journey began in his teens deeply immersed in the hardcore punk scene.  Playing in various punk bands, writing zine reviews, and hosting legendary concerts in his college apartment living room laid the foundational community spirit that led him to found his own independent label, Dim Mak Records, in 1996. Today, a full three decades later at age 48, Aoki is an international EDM force and remains one of the biggest festival DJs.
