Steve Lancaster: NZ Rugby CEO on the report looking at Super Rugby and its financial vulnerabilities

from Weekend Sport with Jason Pine · host Newstalk ZB

The financial vulnerability of New Zealand’s five Super Rugby clubs has been laid bare in a new report.  Deloitte’s ‘Building the Competition the Game Needs’, created in conjunction with the executive teams of each club, explores the issues with the game’s current model.  The report highlights that each franchise has reported at least one annual net loss since 2019.  NZ Rugby CEO Steve Lancaster told Piney they don’t deny that it’s difficult for the Super clubs to make a profit, but they do continue to see them as being attractive to private investors.  He says they’re not concerned about the competition, and are very focused on strengthening it and ensuring it’s still here in another 30 years' time.   LISTEN ABOVE  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
