An Oklahoma State wrestler, Nelson comes  from a family of professional wrestlers and his USWF promotion operating out of Amrillo ws at one point a bigger attraction than the UFC.  Though he went 0-2 against the legendary Ralph Gracie, Nelson was at the forefront of the Wrestling vs BJJ rivalry and he was a pioneer of the lower weight classes back when the UFC was basically a heavyweight show.
