Still Getting Liver Function Blood Testing?

from Finding Your Way with Ocular Melanoma

If you've been diagnosed with ocular melanoma it is important that you have a systemic surveillance plan. This means scheduling regular scans under the supervision of an oncologist to monitor your body for metastasis, possible spread of the eye melanoma. More than ever, this is very important - we now have effective therapies should it be discovered that your cancer has spread. People have the most options available to them when spread of the cancer is discovered EARLY. So the tests that you get must be the best for early detection. Liver function enzyme testing that you get with a blood test (AST, ALT, ALP, GGT) will only become abnormal when the cancer burden in the liver is significant. What does this mean? It could mean that by time the liver enzyme testing is abnormal, your liver metastasis may be advanced. Instead of blood testing, be sure that you have imaging scans of the abdomen. At this time, our scans - MRI and/or CT scans - are the best tests for early detection of metastasis.
