The promise of new life in the west called many families to leave everything familiar behind. Pioneers were seeking a new land of opportunity where one could homestead and raise a family. Stockades became the gathering place of protection for these pioneers during troubled times. In 1880 Kansas had passed a constitutional amendment prohibiting the non-medicinal sale of intoxicating beverages, which Kansas saloon keepers widely ignored. This troubled Carry greatly, and she began smashing saloons in her attempt to enforce the law.
