On May 19, Stockdale Masonic Lodge No. 470 held a ceremony to honor and celebrate education in our community. Masonic lodges have been supporting public education since the days of the Republic of Texas. Many of the first public schools actually met in Masonic lodge buildings and the Masons often paid part or all of the teacher’s salary. Masons also instituted the statewide celebration we now know as Texas Public Schools Week. The Lamar Award is named for Mirabeau B. Lamar.
