El guitarrista de Stones the Crows, de apenas 27 años de edad, tuvo la maldita suerte de electrocutarse con su micrófono en sus manos mojadas en una actuación en el Swansea Top Rank en Gales, un 2 de mayo de hace 40 años. Un hecho infrecuente, casi insólito y que nos privó posiblemente de una carrera discográfica que prometía mucho, visto lo hecho hasta ese fatídico suceso. La verdad es que no se suele recordar mucho la figura de este hombre y es una pena porque lo despachado con su banda, Stone The Crows, bien merecía un mayor respeto. Hablando de este combo escocés, es inevitable no hacer referencia también a su cantante Maggie Bell, un portento de voz muy en la onda de la diosa Janis Joplin, y al bajista James Dewar, que más tarde se puso al lado de Robin Trower como cantante firmando los mejores trabajos del genial guitarrista inglés. Con este lujazo de plantel de músicos es innegable afirmar que lo poco que ha parido esta peña, mientras la formación estuvo en actividad, es más que recomendable. Entre el 70 y 72 firmaron cuatro discos de una calidad excepcional que bien hubieran merecido una mejor atención por parte del público, pero en aquellos años la competencia era tan brutal que lamentablemente pasaron bastante desapercibidos. Un perfecto ejemplo de la destreza de esta banda lo tenemos en el álbum “Ode to John Law”, su segundo L.P publicado en el año 1970. Quizás este disco sea mi favorito por encima del más conocido por parte de la comunidad rockera como es “Teenage licks” y mucha de la culpa la tiene una canción como “Things are gettin’ better”, un pedazo de hit que tenía que haber literalmente arrasado en las listas y que es imposible que no te toque la fibra sensible. Otras claras muestras del buen hacer por parte de este combo son la maravillosa “Mad dogs & Englishmen”, impregnada de buen soul; esa profunda “Danger zone”, de Percy Mayfield con un estupendo trabajo de Maggie Bell para dejar huella en tus sentidos; la vertiente más blues se pasea por “Love”; los toques progresivos se hacen notar gracias al órgano de John McGinnis en “Sad mary”, o la inquietante atmósfera que desprende “Friend”, remata un excelente disco que no ha perdido frescura con el paso del tiempo.
