The earliest forms of language were symbols and pictographs. Cuneiform symbols made up the earliest known languages of Sumerian and Akkadian. Egyptian hieroglyphs are considered the next oldest language. So for humans, symbols have always carried a high level of importance. Symbols can transcend time and culture and be interpreted by future generations. Although the meanings of symbols can change with time as well.
