Jesus reaches for agapaō—total, sacrificial, all-in love—while Peter can only answer with phileō, the warm affection of a friend. That gap is the gut-punch, and it grieves Peter by the third question. Yet Jesus refuses to leave him staring at his shame. Each confession is met with a command: feed My lambs, tend My sheep, feed My sheep. Love that's real doesn't just feel—it works. Then Jesus names the cost: hands once free will be bound and stretched out, "signifying by what death he would glorify God." The road ends in sacrifice.
