STOP LETTING THE PAST DEFINE YOU: MASSIMO RIGOTTI
from Peace Love and Bring a Bat · host David Chametzky
STOP LETTING THE PAST DEFINE YOU: MASSIMO Rigotti ON RECOVERY, IDENTITY & THE S.O.B.E.R. METHOD What happens when achievement, addiction, trauma, and identity all collide? On this episode of Peace, Love, and Bring a Bat, Uncle Dave welcomes entrepreneur, author, and recovery advocate Massimo Rigotti creator of The Sober Method. Massimo built companies across tech, banking, entertainment, publishing, and printing. Along the way, drinking became part of the lifestyle. Eventually, alcohol was joined by cocaine as his life unraveled. He lost his business, home, marriage, cars, and nearly everything he had built. By 2015, Massimo was living on the streets of Kansas City. In March 2016, he stood up sober—and has remained sober for 10 years. Recovery forced him to confront something deeper: a childhood fear of abandonment. Massimo realized much of his drive to perform came from believing he had to work harder to be wanted. A turning point came when he met Samantha. Only hours after meeting him, she whispered: “You don’t have to drink to be awesome. I see you.” Samantha became an important part of his sobriety journey. Tragically, she was killed by a drunk driver in 2020. In that grief, Massimo chose not to return to alcohol and committed to carrying their planned work forward. In this episode, you will discover: • How high achievement can hide unresolved trauma • Why addiction can slowly shift from celebration to coping • How childhood abandonment shaped Massimo’s identity • Why removing the “performative mask” became essential to recovery • How grief tested his sobriety after Samantha’s death • Why recovery must include rebuilding identity • How stigma can follow people long after substance use ends • Why labels can affect opportunity and self-perception • How phones, social media, food, and substances can all become avoidance tools • Why support systems are essential in recovery • How changing your circle can change your future • Why confidence grows by stacking skills, experiences, and new identities THE S.O.B.E.R. METHOD Massimo’s framework stands for: S — Stoic O — Observe B — Behavior E — Execute R — Restore The idea is to slow down, understand your thinking, identify the behavior that follows, choose a better response, and repeat until healthier patterns grow stronger. At the center of the method is one question: Why am I doing what I am doing? Massimo believes people often stay trapped in identities created by trauma, expectations, relationships, or old habits. Growth requires being willing to examine those identities and let go of what no longer serves you. BUILDING A SUPPORT SYSTEM Massimo says recovery cannot survive on willpower alone. During his final struggle to become sober, he experienced seven difficult relapses within a few weeks. He eventually realized some people around him were pulling him back toward the life he was trying to leave. So he built a new community. He created a monthly guys’ night where friends could eat, play cards, talk, and connect without substances being the center of the relationship. Sometimes recovery requires changing more than your behavior. It requires changing your environment. SEED FOR THE MAGIC GARDEN Massimo leaves listeners with a simple challenge: Go to the mirror. Look at yourself and say: “I am enough.” Your first steps may be uncertain. You may wobble. You may fall. But confidence grows by taking another step. The power to rebuild your life begins within.
