from Magic’s in the Mess · host Magic’s in the Mess
Why do we overshare? We want validation, we have something to prove because we don't feel good enough. In other situations, we overshare because we are seeking advice and hoping that someone else can provide the answer for us when the answer is your choice. How do you stop? We're your hosts Lauren and Danielle, here to empower you to embrace your inner radiance because confidence is so much more than looks. Our goal is to help you become your best self. Whether you're strutting into an event or conquering the boardroom, join us as we explore topics like self love, inner strength and owning your unique journey to confidence. So, grab your favorite drinkie and turn up the volume because you're about to unleash your true potential. As easy as it is to say "stop oversharing" the action and the reason is something that you can't just shut off. Perhaps you weren't listened to as a child so you constantly talk. Perhaps you don't feel good enough to be in that work situation so you overshare with colleagues. Perhaps you just want advice because you don't trust yourself to make a decision which leads to the friends/family using it against you down the road. Tangible tools to stop oversharing: 1. Create your top 3. These are the friends you go to with anything and everything because it's a judgement free zone. even if you mess up they will still love and support you. 2. Talk it out. Voice record yourself talking and talking and talking. Friends get tired of listening to you talk in circles. Your voice recorder won't. This will also allow you the ability to go back and listen it. Perhaps you pick up some extra clues! And now it's out of your system 3. Journal. If you don't want to voice record, a good ol pen and paper will do the trick. If youre a visual person this is the best way to get things out of your systems. create a pros and cons list, rank things, etc. 4. Decide what points you are going to talk about prior to arriving in the situation. If you think through what details to share and what details to hold back, you're prepared and won't slip up. Be Self Aware. Get to know yourself. Do the work. Trust yourself. We can't stress this enough. Being self aware of what you're saying, how you're saying it and the frequency is important. People can see through know it alls. People can see through smoke and mirrors. You can't trick someone and if you can, it's for a short time. Places to NOT overshare: Social Media Family Friends Strangers Work Consider your boundaries. If you have loose boundaries with yourself, this may contribute to oversharing as well. Respect yourself enough to know that things are to be kept private. Not everything needs to be news. Less is more. Something this motto can apply to discussions. If it's a great story that deserves every little detail then yes, go for it. If it's not then remember most people don't care. As much as your friends and family want to help you, there is also a limit that they can handle. So if you want to have a productive conversation, use their time wisely. Build your muscle to feel confident with your decisions. This way NO ONE can shake you. If you come to a decision and you are genuinely excited, other's people's opinions won't bug you if they don't align with your decision. If feedback does shake you then maybe you aren't as confident about that decision as you thought (: New episodes every Tuesday!
