Stop Splitting the Bill: How to Accept and Decline Treats Without Losing "Face"
from Classy Mandarin · host Selina | Intonation Coach 🇨🇳
In the West, splitting the bill or “going Dutch” is a straightforward way to end a meal. In China, however, the rules of engagement depend entirely on who is sitting across from you.During formal dinners or business gatherings, there is almost always a designated host known as the 东道主 (dōngdàozhǔ). When someone steps up to 做东 (zuòdōng - to act as host) or decides to 尽地主之谊 (jìn dìzhǔ zhī yì - to show local hospitality), they are picking up the tab. In these corporate scenarios, you don’t need to fight for the bill; However, in daily life among friends and peers, a casual meal frequently sparks a lively tug-of-war over the check.
