Towards the end of last year in December 2022, the Wall Street Journal reported that more than 300,000 US accountants and auditors had left their jobs in the past two years. On the academic front, they reported that college enrollment for finance and accounting degrees fell by 17%. Now, this mass exodus of finance and accounting professionals is not entirely a new phenomenon. We've heard a lot over the last couple of years about the COVID 19 induced great resignation and of quiet quitting. But where these conversations fall short is addressing what happens next? What happens now when employers can't fill the gap that's been created by the number of people who have left their finance and accounting jobs?
