Story x Story #185: We Second That Emotion (Inside Out 2)

We’re back from our recording break with new episodes for the second half of Season 6! This week, Nigel and Tazziii delve headfirst into our subconscious for a deep dive into Inside Out 2 (starting at 26:46), with our very own Illustrator Pinali. It’s been a while since we talked about new stories, so we have a bumper “Stories We’re Enjoying” segment, before we get into the discussion of this Pixar favourite sequel and now the biggest animated film of all time! We talk about whether the story represents an end to the “Pixar Slump” or just another in a long line of successes for the Disney-owned studio. Then we get existential as we analyse the new more complex emotions and how they resonate with us as adults today as well as young people navigating an ever more complex world around them. We’re talking narrative too, including a debate on whether this sequel stays too close to safety when it comes to worldbuilding and character development. This week's storytelling tip is about having fun with analogy in your narrative to bring complex ideas to a broad audience.
