Stratioti
from HistoryMaps Podcast
In this episode, we explore the Stratioti, the Albanian and Greek mercenary light cavalry who brought fast-moving Balkan warfare into the armies of early modern Europe. Recruited heavily by the Republic of Venice and later employed by powers such as France, Spain, and England, these soldiers became known for hit-and-run attacks, ambushes, feigned retreats, and flexible cavalry maneuvers that challenged traditional Western battlefield methods. We also look at their distinctive dress and weaponry, from conical caps to javelins, maces, and mixed Eastern-Western arms, as well as their cultural impact beyond combat, including their role in forming Greek Orthodox communities across Italy and the wider diaspora.
