There is a time to stand up for your kids.  This doesn't mean rescuing them from their behaviors.  It means showing them that you trust them.  It means giving them grace when they may deserve otherwise.  It means being in their corner.  One of the greatest ways to provide your kids a sense of security is to let them know that you are behind them.  You believe in them.  You are their support system that will be there to encourage them through the difficult times.  Again, this does not mean to protect them from negative consequences, but rather to encourage them through the consequences.  Showing them that they do matter and are important to you.  This is especially important when you put your own security needs behind theirs.  In other words, you don't worry about how their behavior may make you look, but rather, what may be best for them in a given situation.  Parenting means dying to yourself.
