Student Patrollers Keep Kids Safe | Calgary News

Back to school means Alberta’s fifth-grade student patrollers are back on duty—keeping sidewalks safe for decades with zero serious injuries. Beyond safety, the program builds confidence and leadership as kids teach younger peers how to cross streets properly. Drivers must slow down, heed patroller signals, and police are ramping up enforcement in school zones. Pedestrians should always look both ways, use crosswalks, and make eye contact. With speed limits as low as 30 km/h in places like Lethbridge, everyone’s role matters—because these young guardians are counting on us to be patient, mindful, and cooperative.
