Study 135: Jake Muir Gong Bath: Sound Art's Challenge to Material Singularity and Permanence

In June 2026, The Wire reviewed Jake Muir’s album Pareidolia under the headline “A bardo gong bath of in-betweenness.” There is no gong bath and there are no gongs. Pareidolia is a fixed, editioned record assembled from roughly two hundred samples of death and black metal: drones and reverb tails grouped by key, looped, and set against each other. The wellness metaphor lives in the critic’s byline, not in the object. This study corrects the frame on the record.
