Study 182: The Objects Are Not the Evidence: Will Higgins's The Speedway's Attic

from Objects of Affection Collection — Studies · host Objects of Affection Collection

Will Higgins's The Speedway's Attic, at CAMi in Indianapolis from 1 May to 16 August 2026, assembled the Indianapolis 500 stories that did not make the monument, from newspaper archives, oral histories and the margins of the official record. A wall label in the gallery states that the stories are true and the objects are facsimiles. This study argues that the label is the mechanism that makes the exhibition possible: the material evidence for stories the monument declined to keep is unacquirable and unauthenticable, and declaring the objects reproductions converts an insurmountable provenance
