Study Notes | Constants

from Career Pod · host Dana Francis

This episode I'm doing something a little different. These are some of my study notes from back when I was Pipefitting school. The following numbers are the constants discussed in this podcast relevant to the pipe trades. 3.14 =Pi 4°C = water at most dense 39°F = water at most dense 0°C = freezing point of water 32°F = freezing point of water 7.5% = how much water expands when it freezes 100°C = boiling point of water 212°F = boiling point of water 1700 = times water expands volume from water to steam 2 kj/kg/°C = sensible heat of ice 0.5 btu/lb/°F = sensible heat of ice 335 kj/kg = latent heat required to change ice to water 144 btu/lb = latent heat required to change ice to water 4.2 kj/kg/°C = sensible heat of water 1 btu/lb/°F = sensible heat of water 2257 kj/kg = latent heat required to vaporize water to steam 970 btu/lb = latent heat required to vaporize water to steam 2 kj/kg/°C = sensible heat required to raise steam temperature 0.5 btu/lb/°F = sensible heat required to raise steam temperature 0.433 = psi per 1 foot head of water 0.0361 = psi per 1 inch head of water 2.31 ' = 1 psi 27.7 " = 1 psi 62.4 lbs = 1 cubic foot of water 10 lbs = 1 imperial gallon 6.24 = imperial gallons in a cubic foot 0.833 imperial gallons = 1 US gallon 1.2 US gallon = 1 imperial gallon 150 btu per EDR of water 240 btu per EDR of steam 121°C = max temperature of low pressure boiler 250°F = max temperature of low pressure boiler 15 psi = max working pressure of low pressure boiler 33, 475 btu = one boiler horsepower 34.5 lbs of water into steam @ 212°F/100°C = 1 BHP (°F - 32) / 1.8 = °C (°C x 1.8) + 32 = °F 2.54 cm = 1 inch 25.4 mm = 1 inch 2.2 lbs = 1 kg 0.24 btu/lb/°f = specific heat capacity of air 1 = relative density of water and air 13.6 = relative density of mercury 0.076 lb = weight of 1 cubic foot of air @STP 14.7 psi = atmospheric pressure @ sea level 29.92" mercury = one atmosphere 760 mm = one atmosphere 30° = angle used on isometric drawings Best of luck in your journey studying!
